Rowing engages approximately 86% of the body's muscle mass, making it one of the highest calorie-per-minute exercises available — comparable to cross-country skiing and substantially higher than cycling or running at matched perceived effort (Maestu et al., 2005). A practical estimate: 8–12 kcal/minute for steady-state work, 12–18 kcal/minute for intervals, adjusted ±15% based on body mass relative to 80 kg. The excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) effect adds 5–15% to total session caloric cost, with high- intensity intervals producing larger EPOC than steady-state work (LaForgia et al., 2006).
