The Story

COMPOSITE PORTRAIT

The Pulse Score captures something subtler than standard emotional intelligence: attunement. It is the capacity to feel the emotional pulse of a room, a boat, or a race — the unspoken energy that determines whether a crew is about to surge or collapse. Some athletes feel this naturally. Most can be trained. All can be measured. The Pulse Score reweights the EIS-32 framework toward two critical domains: Affective Resonance (the capacity to feel what others feel without being told) and Contextual Empathy Modulation (the ability to adjust your emotional openness based on what the situation demands). In a race, you need to feel your crew. You also need to not be overwhelmed by their pain. The Pulse Score measures both capacities.

This is a composite portrait. The story reflects patterns documented across many athletes. No individual is depicted.

Pulse Score: Feel the Room. Read Yourself. Channel Everything. The Pulse Score measures emotional attunement and channeling — your ability to sense the emotional frequency of the crew, the race, and yourself, and direct that energy toward performance. What the Research Tells Us Decety and Jackson (2004) established that empathic resonance — the automatic mirroring of others’ emotional states — is a distinct neural process from cognitive empathy. For crew rowing, this automatic resonance is the mechanism by which one rower’s confidence or panic spreads through the boat in milliseconds, below conscious awareness. Athletes with high Affective Resonance feel this spread. Athletes with high Contextual Modulation can control whether they absorb it or redirect it. For coxswains, the Pulse Score is particularly diagnostic. A coxswain with high resonance but low modulation will absorb the crew’s anxiety and amplify it through increasingly frantic calls. A coxswain with high resonance and high modulation will sense the anxiety, remain grounded, and deliver the calming presence the crew needs. “The Pulse Score measures the invisible communication channel in every crew — the emotional frequency that determines whether nine people are rowing together or nine people are rowing near each other.” — Noah Wickliffe, M.S., Flowbase Assessment Series 32 Items, attunement- weighted 2 Key domains: Resonance + Modulation Critical For coxswains and crew leaders

§ 03 HOW THE AI COACH USES THIS SCORE

How the AI Coach Uses This Score

THE STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE

The Pulse Score identifies who sets the emotional tone in a crew and who follows it. The AI Coach uses this to build lineups where emotional leadership is positioned where the crew needs it most.

The AI Coach uses your Pulse Score to identify your role in crew emotional dynamics. High-Pulse athletes are natural emotional leaders — their state sets the crew’s tone. The AI positions them strategically in lineups. Low-Pulse athletes receive attunement training through the Crew Cohesion Program — exercises that build the ability to read and respond to nonverbal crew communication. The Pulse Score identifies who sets the emotional tone in a crew and who follows it. The AI Coach uses this to build lineups where emotional leadership is positioned where the crew needs it most. Know Yourself. Row Better.
