The Story

COMPOSITE PORTRAIT

Empathy in rowing is not about being nice. It is about being accurate — accurately sensing what your crewmates are experiencing so you can synchronize with their effort, not just your own. The Empathy Index measures four dimensions: how well you take your crewmate’s perspective, how strongly you resonate with their emotional state, how aware you are of synchronization dynamics within the boat, and how effectively you modulate your empathic response to match competitive demands. In a race, you need enough empathy to feel the crew’s rhythm and enough modulation to not be overwhelmed by their pain. The Empathy Index measures both — the gas and the brake of the empathic system.

This is a composite portrait. The story reflects patterns documented across many athletes. No individual is depicted.

Empathy Index: Crew Attunement at the Neural Level The Empathy Index Score measures the four dimensions of empathy that determine whether you feel your crew, fight your crew, or flow with your crew — Perspective Attunement, Affective Resonance, Synchronization Awareness, and Contextual Empathy Modulation. Noah Wickliffe, M.S. · Founder, MyoSport Inc. · 8 min read

What the Research Tells Us de Vignemont and Singer (2006) established that empathy comprises both automatic (affective resonance) and controlled (perspective-taking) components, each with distinct neural substrates. For team sport, Bruner et al. (2014) showed empathy predicted prosocial behavior and team cohesion in youth athletes. In rowing, synchronization awareness — the ability to sense whether the crew is in or out of sync — is a specific empathic skill that directly affects boat speed through timing precision. The Contextual Empathy Modulation domain is unique to the SportsFlow system. It measures the capacity to increase empathy when crew connection is needed and suppress it when competitive intensity requires emotional independence — the “competitive empathy suppression” that elite athletes use to race aggressively against people they train with daily. “Empathy is the invisible infrastructure of a fast crew. When you can feel your crewmate’s effort, you synchronize with it. When you can modulate that feeling, you lead with it. The Empathy Index measures both capacities.” — Noah Wickliffe, M.S., Flowbase Assessment Series 32 Assessment items 4 Empathy dimensions measured Core EPAB instrument

§ 03 HOW THE AI COACH USES THIS SCORE

How the AI Coach Uses This Score

THE STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE

The Empathy Index measures the capacity that makes crews more than the sum of their parts. The AI Coach develops it, positions it in lineups, and builds the crew dynamics infrastructure that produces swing.

The AI Coach uses your Empathy Index to inform crew selection, lineup positioning, and interpersonal training. Athletes with high Synchronization Awareness are placed in positions where timing precision matters most. Athletes with low Empathy Modulation receive progressive exposure to competitive-cooperative dynamics — training the ability to race aggressively in the morning and train supportively in the afternoon. The Empathy Index measures the capacity that makes crews more than the sum of their parts. The AI Coach develops it, positions it in lineups, and builds the crew dynamics infrastructure that produces swing. Know Yourself. Row Better.
