The Story
Every score in the SportsFlow system — from the FlowScore to the Zen Score to the MindScore Index — runs through the same underlying engine: the Performance Scan. This is not a score itself. It is the system that produces all scores. It takes any instrument’s raw item responses, applies domain-weighted scoring, modifies the result with wearable biometric data when available, classifies the outcome into five performance tiers, and routes the result to the AI Coach for personalized intervention. The five tiers — ELITE, STRONG, MODERATE, DEVELOPING, and AT RISK — determine the urgency and type of AI coaching response. ELITE scores receive maintenance recommendations. AT RISK scores (below 30) trigger human coach escalation. Everything between receives progressive development programming calibrated to close the gap to the next tier.
This is a composite portrait. The story reflects patterns documented across many athletes. No individual is depicted.

Performance Scan: The Engine Behind Every Score The Performance Scan is the universal scoring pipeline that powers all SportsFlow instruments — domain-weighted scoring, wearable biometric modification, five-tier classification, and AI intervention routing, all in one reusable engine. What the Research Tells Us
The Performance Scan architecture is designed around psychometric best practices: weighted domain scoring allows different domains to contribute differently to the composite (because not all domains are equally important for performance); biometric modification adds objective physiological context to subjective questionnaire data; and tier classification provides actionable categories rather than abstract numbers. The ±10-point biometric modifier is evidence-based: HRV coherence ≥0.7 (+3 pts), sleep quality ≥85% (+2 pts), resting HR within 5% of baseline (+2 pts) — all supported by research linking these markers to the constructs being measured. The AT RISK escalation protocol ensures that athletes scoring below 30 on any instrument receive human attention, not just AI coaching. This safety mechanism acknowledges the limits of automated intervention for athletes in genuine psychological distress. “The Performance Scan is the invisible backbone of the entire SportsFlow assessment system. Athletes never see it. They see scores. But every score they see was produced by this engine — consistently, reliably, and with the biometric integration that makes SportsFlow unique.” — Noah Wickliffe, M.S., Flowbase Assessment Series 5 Performance tiers: Elite to At Risk ±10 Biometric modifier range (points) <30 AT RISK threshold triggers human coach
How the AI Coach Uses This Score
The Performance Scan ensures that every score in the system is produced with the same rigor, interpreted with the same framework, and routed to the same AI coaching pipeline. Consistency across instruments is what makes the system trustworthy at scale.
The AI Coach receives every Performance Scan output with full context: composite score, individual domain scores, biometric modifier applied, tier classification, and the specific domain(s) driving the result. This context determines the AI’s coaching response — which domain to target, how aggressively to push, and whether to escalate to a human coach. For coaches, the Performance Scan provides a standardized framework for understanding any assessment result. Whether looking at FlowScore, Zen Score, MindScore, or any EPAB instrument, the five-tier system provides immediate interpretive context without requiring expertise in each specific construct. The Performance Scan ensures that every score in the system is produced with the same rigor, interpreted with the same framework, and routed to the same AI coaching pipeline. Consistency across instruments is what makes the system trustworthy at scale. Know Yourself. Row Better.
