Dallam et al. (2018) showed that nasal breathing during sub-threshold exercise reduces ventilation rate by 22% while maintaining equivalent oxygen saturation, increases CO2 tolerance, and promotes parasympathetic tone. For rowers during steady-state training, nasal breathing improves metabolic efficiency and teaches the respiratory system to tolerate higher levels of CO2 — which delays the ventilatory distress that causes technique breakdown during races. Zaccaro et al. (2018) conducted a systematic review of slow breathing techniques and found that breathing at rates below 10 breaths per minute — particularly the 4-4-4-4 box breathing pattern — activates the vagus nerve, increases heart rate variability, reduces cortisol, and improves attention and emotional regulation. For rowers, this has direct applications in pre-race preparation, between-piece recovery, and managing anxiety during competition. Harbour et al. (2022) found that cadence-linked breathing in rowing — synchronizing inhale and exhale with specific phases of the stroke — improves both mechanical efficiency and perceived exertion. At lower stroke rates, exhaling on the drive and inhaling on the recovery is standard. At racing rates above 34, a 2:1 breathing pattern (two strokes per breath cycle) prevents hyperventilation while maintaining oxygen delivery.
