Nideffer (1976) developed the Theory of Attentional and Interpersonal Style, identifying four attentional modes: broad-external (reading the race), narrow-external (watching the blade), broad-internal (strategy and pacing), and narrow-internal (body sensation). Elite performers shift fluidly between these modes as demanded by the situation. Attentional fixation in any single mode — particularly narrow-internal during racing — is associated with performance decrements. Wulf (2013) conducted extensive research showing that an external focus of attention (focusing on the effect of movement, e.g., the blade pulling water) produces superior motor performance compared to an internal focus (focusing on body movements, e.g., pushing the legs). For rowers, this means cueing blade connection and boat run rather than muscle activation produces better technique and lower perceived exertion. Marcora et al. (2009) demonstrated that mental fatigue — cognitive depletion from sustained attention — impairs endurance performance by increasing perceived exertion without changing physiological capacity. Athletes who performed a cognitively demanding task before exercise reached exhaustion 15% sooner despite identical metabolic responses.
