Mah et al. (2011) showed that extending sleep to 10 hours per night in collegiate athletes improved sprint times, reaction time, mood, and perceived physical and mental wellbeing. Conversely, Reilly & Edwards (2007) demonstrated that even moderate sleep restriction (6 hours for 4 nights) reduced maximal voluntary contraction strength by 10%, impaired perceived exertion accuracy, and reduced glycogen resynthesis rates. Fullagar et al. (2015) reviewed sleep and athletic recovery and found that sleep is the primary window for growth hormone release (80% of daily GH release occurs during slowwave sleep), protein synthesis, neural memory consolidation of motor skills, and immune system restoration. Athletes sleeping fewer than 7 hours per night show 1.7x higher injury rates and 4.2x higher illness rates compared to those sleeping 8+ hours. Lastella et al. (2015) studied pre-competition sleep in elite athletes and found that 64% reported poor sleep the night before major competition, with anxiety being the primary cause. However, single-night sleep disruption has minimal effect on next-day performance — the body draws on reserves. The danger is chronic sleep disruption during training blocks, which progressively degrades recovery capacity and mimics overtraining syndrome. "Sleep is not optional recovery — it is the recovery.
