What the Research Tells Us
The NSCA Youth Resistance Training Position Statement (Faigenbaum et al., 2009) established that children as young as 7 can benefit from resistance training when programming emphasizes movement quality, progressive bodyweight loading, and supervised technique. For adolescents 12–17, the priority is neuromuscular coordination — training the nervous system to recruit muscle efficiently before adding external load. For collegiate athletes 18–22, Suchomel et al. (2016) showed that compound, multi-joint movements (squats, deadlifts, pulls) at progressive loads produced the greatest sport-specific strength transfer. This is the window for maximal strength development — recovery capacity is high, connective tissue is resilient, and the neuromuscular system can absorb high training volumes. After 40, the equation changes fundamentally. Fragala et al. (2019) demonstrated that recovery capacity declines faster than strength capacity. Masters athletes can still produce near-maximal force — they just cannot recover from the training that produces it.
